Under pressure, judgment feels productive.

It’s fast.
It’s clear.
It creates the illusion of control.
When something goes wrong, judgment shows up immediately:
Why didn’t you?
How did this happen?
We’ve already talked about this.
There’s a sharpness to it that feels efficient. It signals urgency. It re-establishes authority. It tells the room: we are not drifting.
But here’s the problem.
Judgment may create speed.
It rarely creates movement.
Because when someone feels judged, they don’t move forward. They protect themselves.
They defend.
They explain.
They justify.
They shut down.
And now you’re no longer solving the problem. You’re managing protection.
Curiosity, on the other hand, feels slower.
It doesn’t sound as decisive. It doesn’t deliver the same hit of certainty.
But curiosity does something judgment cannot: it lowers defensiveness.
Compare:
“Why didn’t you get this done?”
versus
“What got in the way?”
Both questions hold accountability.
Neither ignores the outcome.
But the second one invites information instead of defense.
Curiosity doesn’t remove standards.
It changes how those standards are received.
When we judge, we’re often protecting something:
Our credibility.
Our timeline.
Our reputation.
Our sense of control.
Judgment feels efficient because it protects what feels at risk.
But if what we actually want is change - better performance, stronger ownership, deeper trust - then curiosity is the more strategic move.
It may take a few seconds longer.
Yet it creates far more forward motion.
